Suginami Ward is located in the western part of the 23 wards of Tokyo, and this area used to be under Musashi Province, and was a local county of the same area in the Edo Period and Meiji and Taisho Periods.
It was not until 1929 (Showa 4) when it was incorporated into Tokyo City from the Tama area that it was treated as a Tokyo ward.
The origin of the name of Suginami Ward dates back to the early Edo period, when the Okabe clan, lords of Narimune and Tabata villages, planted a row of cedar trees along the Ome Kaido Road to demarcate the boundaries of their territories.
