The National Museum of Western Art opened in April 1959 as an institution that offers a wide range of visitors the opportunity to view works of Western art, mainly from the Matsukata Collection collected in Europe by the entrepreneur Kojiro Matsukata.
The museum exhibits Western paintings from the late Middle Ages to the early 20th century, including works from the Matsukata Collection, as well as modern French sculptures by Rodin and others, throughout the year in the Main Wing, New Wing, and vestibule.
The main building, designed by French architect Le Corbusier, one of the leading architects of the 20th century, was completed in 1959 and is designated a National Important Cultural Property.
