Tokyo Ueno Zoo is Japan’s first zoo, which opened in 1882 in Ueno Park. The zoo is famous for its giant pandas, but it also keeps 500 other species of animals, including rare animals such as Sumatran tigers, and has the highest number of visitors of any zoo in Japan.
The giant pandas have been absent for about three years since the death of Ling Ling in 2008, but in 2011, a male panda named Bi-Li and a female panda named Xian Nu arrived in Japan.
The male was named Li Li and the female was named Xin Xin, and they were released to the public in the spring.
